Jennifer Duncan, CKD offers a host of services including hourly consultations for when you just need a little help getting started, “design only” to create plans for your contractor, or full design/build projects that include all materials purchasing, scheduling, and project management for your home renovations. We are experts in kitchens, bathrooms, home offices, mudrooms, laundry rooms, libraries, pantries, custom closets, wet/dry bars, repurposing rooms, altering floorplans, materials selections and specifying, color coordination, space planning and organization, and decorative details.

Our Design & Renovation Process

Discovery Call

The process starts with a discovery call. We will schedule a 20 to 30 minute phone call to discuss your wishes and goals for your remodeling project, Virginia Design Group’s process and your options for design services, as well as a timeline for getting started with the renovation work, and how to calculate a budget for your project.

In-Home Consultation

Our next step is to meet in person at your home.  During this visit, we will take the time to understand your underlying needs so that we may deliver the optimal layout and design for you and your family. We will continue our discussion of your project goals and how certain changes can improve the function of the space.  Take this time to ask lots of questions and get some fresh ideas- make sure we are hearing and understanding your vision and goals, and taking your vision a step further. When you are ready to start designing, we will review and sign the design agreement, document the space with detailed measurements and photos, and schedule our next meeting for approximately two weeks later to go over potential new layouts.

Design Approval

The next series of meetings will include looking over and discussing the options for layouts, presenting each with a scaled floorplan and line drawn renderings.  These will give you a good idea of how your rooms will look and feel.  Once we decide on the best layout, we will fine-tune the storage and organization, ensuring your new kitchen, bath, or other functional space preforms optimally for your family’s busy lifestyle.  With the completed layout design in hand, we will move forward with materials selections- the fun part!

Product Specification

Jennifer and her team will walk you through picking out the best products and materials for your new space. With Jennifer’s extensive product knowledge and showroom resources, selecting cabinetry, countertops, tile, and all of the various fixtures will be fun and easy. We have a fantastic network of local distributor showrooms, and you will have the opportunity to see and touch most products before making your final selections. If we don’t have a cabinet door or piece of tile in your preferred color choice, we can often order a sample. Jennifer will walk you through each product offering, pairing down the options to focus in on your chosen aesthetic.

Project Proposal

Once your product selections are made, Jennifer will meet our team of skilled tradesmen at your home for a site visit. Each tradesman will be given a detailed layout and scope, including product specifications, for their portion of the project. This visit allows each tradesman to explore the site and note any relevant conditions they may need to account for to provide a detailed and accurate quote. Shortly after this visit, the tradesmen’s quotes will come into the office, and we will combine those quotes with the cost of the materials selected,  project management required, and other relevant project costs to calculate your true project cost. Your job proposal will include a total project price, payment schedule, detailed listing of all products and work to be preformed, and a complete set of final plans.

Starting Renovation

Signing your proposal and making your deposit is just the beginning or your renovation project. We will review your project one more time, just to be sure we have every detail taken care of. Then, we order everything- EVERYTHING. We know first-hand that construction work in your home is stressful and disruptive. We ordered and planned everything in advance so we can have each piece in our hands before we need it. This lets us keep the construction timeline as brief as possible. Once we know when the longest lead items are scheduled to arrive, we will plan your renovation to start shortly after that arrival. The entire project will be scheduled in advance, including some flex days incase we need to adjust. During your renovation, our team will provide you with regular communications to let you know who will be doing what each day in your home, and provide any support we can give to help ease this loud, dirty, difficult process. Once your new space is complete, we promise it will all be worth it!
