2022 Kitchen Design Trends
You’ve probably spent a significant amount of time over the past couple of years in and around your kitchen. It might not functionally work well for your family needs anymore, or it may just be looking old and drab. There’s no better place to start to give your home the design lift it needs than the kitchen. Jennifer Duncan CKD has compiled a list of fabulous kitchen design trends you should be on the lookout for in 2022.
Colorful Kitchen Backsplashes
Having a colorful, unique kitchen backsplash that infuses personality into a kitchen isn’t necessarily new. But, choosing glossy tiles over more of a matte finish is an updated look that is distinctive for the new year. The shiny glaze of a gloss tile brings in a textured appearance to the space. A bold, dark gloss or, in contrast, a very bright one can also bring an eclectic international flair, or coastal look to your kitchen design.
According to Veranda magazine, “green is here to stay.” Three paint companies agree, calling out shades of green among their 2022 recommended colors of the year: PPG’s Olive Spring, Sherwin-Williams Evergreen Fog, and Valspar’s Blanched Thyme. Statement Hoods
Clients have been using range hoods as decorative focal points in their kitchen renovations for quite a few years now. In this upcoming season, look out for even larger range hoods that command attention, and metal or stainless steel as the material of choice. There are lots of different range hoods to choose from with more affordable brands like Whirlpool and GE, and higher-end appliance brands like Viking and Wolf.
Mixing Vintage and Modern
Another trend has been mixing modern conveniences with vintage or casual looks. You might see a kitchen with gorgeous, sleek cabinets and modern, push-open cabinet doors juxtaposed with a farmhouse kitchen table. Cottage style kitchens are also making a comeback. A newly renovated kitchen that reminds you of the cozy home you grew up in helps to cultivate the close, connected family feel that we’ve had during the pandemic.
Mixing and matching goes for paint colors as well. “Two-tone” kitchens are gaining popularity. Choose two complementary colors, like gray and blue, to alternate in your kitchen for a truly unique appearance.
Mesh Cabinet Doors
Another design trend that particularly stands out for 2022 is decorative wire mesh used on cabinetry. To make this industrial look really pop, select a gold hue and complement it with matching gold fixtures and knobs. This adds craftsmanship appeal to your kitchen design, while still shielding guests from seeing clutter behind cabinet doors. If you have favorite kitchen items you don’t mind having on display, install open shelves in your kitchen.
Concealed storage and appliances
Make your kitchen design as “smart” as the rest of your home with thoughtful storage spaces. Hidden storage, pantry cupboards with lots of built-in organization, and pull-out drawers make your kitchen extra functional. They also hide some of everyday life’s clutter.
Many clients are stowing away appliances behind what look like matching cabinets or drawers. This pull-out drawer refrigerator from Home Depot creates a unique refrigeration storage solution under your countertop. In the image below, a floor to ceiling pantry door can be used to store food items as well as an appliance like a toaster oven. You could also build a hidden coffee nook or beverage bar to free up counter space.
Don’t forget the family pet!
Pet friendly spaces are increasingly popular in most recent kitchen renovations. With more of the workforce working from home, keeping your new, at-home coworkers happy tends to be higher on our client’s wish lists. One idea is to build a recessed pet feeding station right into your lower cabinetry. Another favorite pet accommodation is a sleeping nook to store beds in a stylish and cozy place.
